Sḵwx̱wú7mesh [Squamish] from the sky
Hi friends,
I hope you all had as good of a summer as I did, though it is coming to an end.
After coming back from Europe, I was supposed to spend two weeks in Squamish with Lisa, Felipe, and Matt before road-tripping through Washington and Oregon for the summer. I was craving the ocean, the sound of waves, and the feeling of surfing. However, Squamish is a vortex filled with beauty and adventures that is really hard to leave. I am writing this post after spending the last three months surrounded by the mountains, rivers, forests, and seas of the Squamish Nation.
I was extremely lucky to meet Lisa on the road last year, the gem who brought me to Squamish and introduced me to the slacklining and highlining community here. A group of beautiful people that foster greatness, support, and care for each other, through the sport they practice and in everyday life. For those discovering the concept of slacklining, let me explain what it is. Slacklining consists of rigging a line between trees to walk off the ground. It gets a little more complicated. When a line is rigged high enough that a harness is needed for safety, it might be called mid-lining. And when a line is high enough that it is excruciatingly terrifying to be on it, it is called highlining. As I spent most of my time with barefooted people, I now know there are also trick lines and freestyle lines for people to do cool tricks.
Here you go, that was my summer….
I am kidding. While most of my summer revolved around watching friends on lines, I also got to go on really cool adventures and live heart-fluttering moments that I want to tell you about.
First, I spent a lot of time in the water. Be it lakes, walking [rolling] off logs, rivers, creeks, or the ocean. Canadian lakes have a special vibe to them. Surrounded by beautiful never-ending forests and mountains, their varied blue waters host barbecues, waterline gatherings, music, and Canadian life altogether. I also was invited to a friends’ wedding at Burn in The Forest. A magical few days dedicated to stunning people, by beautiful people in a wonderful event. I have few words to describe the experience I had during that festival, witnessing the love and kindness I was surrounded with, from people I knew and from people I met. I fell in love… Again. But this time, I believe there will be no heartbreak.
My friend Shaun took a few of us canyoning in Box Canyon. It was an excruciating day full of repelling, cold water, beautifully carved walls, and, as Shaun would say, “really cool rocks.” In brief, it was amazing!
We also went rafting down the Mamquam river, hung out at lines by the sauna, learned how to weave a space net, hiked up the Chief at 11:30pm, watched the city under dark clouds feeling like Batman, joined a big highline gathering on the Chief where 13 lines were set up, learned how to trad climb, showered in the river, hiked Black Tusk and Panorama ridge in the same day, floated the Mamquam river at “sunrise”, stargazed many times, had a few Northern lights encounters, made breakfast at Furry Creek, and boogied countless times at festivals, concerts, raves, and for no particular reason. We also laughed a lot in the Walmart hotel’s family suite. And many more adventures.
The sad ice from last season melted into a field of love and happiness that does not seem to wither. I have been in a pink bubble for months and am very grateful to all the wonderful people who were part of it.
Eileen has also undergone heavy cosmetic surgery in the last few weeks. She now has insulated walls, a sink, new shelves, and the centerpiece: beautiful drawers made by Chris. And we are on our way to the winter month, away from British Columbia.
Until next time ! Love,
Calypso
